ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 emphasizes one of the main tenants of Lean-it requires a new thought process which leverages single-process ow. It discusses the problems with batching, using both case studies and examples. It discusses the different types of batching and emphasizes the advantage of one-piece or single-piece ow. Examples of this in healthcare include centralized registration and physician rounding, among others. It deŽnes “value-added” in relation to a product or (as in the present case) patients, and discusses the problems of overproduction and waiting as signiŽcant wastes in healthcare. The different types of batching are identiŽed and explained.
