ABSTRACT

Swine have been used as experimental animals throughout history, mainly in anatomical and physiological research. In his De Humani Corporis Fabrica, from 1543, Vesalius referred to swine experiments performed by the Roman physician Galen (ad 130-200), but he made observations about swine himself as well. Also Harvey, in his Anatomica de Motu Cordis et Sanguinis Animalibus (1628), and Bernard, in his Introduction à l’étude de la médecine expérimentale (1865), described observations made of swine. At present, swine are used in a wide range of disciplines.
