ABSTRACT

Water is a substance necessary for human well-being. Daily we drink 2-3 L of water. It is the source and basis of life on the earth, but at the same time, it can be a serious hazard to our health and life. Intensive industrialization has resulted in an increased input of toxic inorganic and organic compounds, drastically reducing the quality of surface waters, which are a source of drinking water for a large part of the world’s population. Groundwater supply is diminishing and, in addition, anthropogenic groundwater pollution has become a fact of life. The majority of anthropogenic water pollutants are toxic and dangerous not only to humans but also to animals and plants. These pollutants should be determined and monitored in tap and surface water. Water pollutants can be classi‘ed as physical, biological, radioactive, inorganic, or organic. This chapter discusses only the biological and chemical organic and inorganic water pollution.
