ABSTRACT

Several of the questionnaires reviewed began with the question “In the past year, have you had pain, aching, sti™ness, burning, numbness, or tingling in the area shown in this diagram?” and the respondent was referred to a body diagram. Because our interview was to be administered via telephone, a multicolored body part diagram was mailed to the carpenter’s homes. However, realizing that the respondent might not have the diagram in hand at the time of interview, the questionnaire was designed to function independently of the body gure. In fact, only half the respondents actually had the diagram present when contacted. erefore, each body part was specied by name, with some degree of misclassication inevitable. For example, the respondent might be confused about where the shoulder begins and the neck ends. Since we were concerned about misclassication, the upper and lower back were not di™erentiated but were referred to as the “back.”
