ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we will cover a key Lean concept: pull. As a general rule, we always want to apply the flow concepts covered in Chapter 3 first, and then apply pull where necessary. But there are exceptions, and often, pull can be easier to implement than flow, as it represents less substantial change. For example, an organization can implement pull without the need to physically reorganize the office layout. Smaller changes are viewed as easier medicine to swallow, and a nice early step in the implementation of a Lean office or service organization. Further, as you will see later in this chapter, the application of pull can trigger other important practices such as cross-training. This will lay a foundation for the implementation of the flow concepts covered in the Chapter 3.
