ABSTRACT

Keeping the weather out is an essential function of the building envelope in almost any climate. In temperate zones the most important aspect of climate management through the building envelope is resistance to moisture; this is currently dealt with in Part C of the Building Regulations for England and Wales. The role of precipitation in all its forms was given greater emphasis in the 2004 revision of Part C (Building [Amendment] Regulations, 2004). Part C does not currently include Ÿood performance as Ÿooding may be from other sources such as blocked drains or tidal inundation. Furthermore, Ÿooding can be the manifestation of an accumulation of precipitation rather than an immediate effect. However, it has been determined that Ÿooding could be brought into the future scope of Part C; this will be considered in the next review of Part C.
