In 1976, scientists monitoring North Carolina’s Belews Lake were perplexed by the sudden disappearance of the young-of-the-year age class of popular game sh species. This man-made reservoir was fed in part by water from a coal ash settling basin. By 1977, only 3 of the lake’s 29 resident species remained. The
