The widening of Los Santos bridge. A case study of a tailor-made structure

ABSTRACT: In this paper the main features of the Construction project of the widening of Los Santos Bridge are discussed. The project involves the widening of a major 600 m long bridge with spans of 150 meters increasing the width of the deck from 12.00 to 24.00 meters, without recurring to an independent structure. The project is based on the idea of providing minimum strengthening of the existing structure. This approach has allowed very important savings but has also required a challenging design project some aspects of which are discussed in this paper.
