ABSTRACT

This section reviews the current evidence on the BP-related effects of dietary modi cations, weight loss, reduction in sodium intake, and physical activity. Chapter 1 reviews the association of macronutrients and dietary patterns with BP. Many studies have attempted to disse ct the effects of individual macronutrients or different

combinations of macronutrients on BP. However, it is challenging to draw de nitive conclusions from these studies due to various design dif culties. The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) was the rst major clinical trial using controlled feeding protocol to test the effect of two dietary patterns on BP, with rigorous ndings. The DASH study and another study with modi ed DASH dietary patterns are reviewed in this chapter.
