ABSTRACT

There is no universally-accepted certification for usability professionals. Tn the US, one can pass the test of the Board Certification of Professional Ergonomists and become a "Certified Human Factors Professional." But few employers demand such a certification for someone they hire. Jakob Nielsen (2005), says "we will need to scale up by a factor of 100 in tenns of available [usability] personnel" (p. 3). Elsewhere (Bias, 2003) I've written about the dangers of amateur usability engineering. How shall we train those new usability professionals? How shall we help avoid amateurism in the field? Here I offer my thoughts on usability curriculum for usability professionals and the real-world context that motivates the need for such a curriculum.
