ABSTRACT

We are coming close to achieving an understanding of the molecular and physiological mechanisms by which pain is experienced, but we still cannot answer all of our questions about the complex experience of pain (1-6). Individual responses to pain vary greatly from person to person and across cultures. Pain tolerance, reactions to pain, and meaning found in pain are as much learned as they are biologically determined (5).
