ABSTRACT

Biological threat agents have often been called the poor man’s nuclear weapon [1]. This chapter explores the concepts involved in biowarfare (BW) and bioterrorism (BT) and compares the strategies used. Biological threat agents, such as bullets, bombs, and chemicals, can result in a large number of people who are dead or injured. In this chapter, attacks against personnel are primarily discussed. Similar considerations would be involved in a discussion of antianimal, antiplant, and antimaterial agents. It is useful to start with a discussion of some of the common attributes of both BW and BT.
