ABSTRACT
This appendix provides additional background about the definition of information content used for the calculation of semantic similarity in Chapter 10. The field of information theory was created by Claude Shannon (1916-2001), an American mathematician who published a landmark paper on the mathematical theory of communication in 1948 [231]. Shannon’s work led to the concept of information content among many other things.
