ABSTRACT

It is beyond question that the performance of regular physical activity directly contributes to better health outcomes. These benets, which have been previously described, are great enough to warrant public health agencies issuing recommendations on the amount and type of physical activity individuals should be performing. However, consideration also has to be paid to the inherent risk that is present for the performance of all forms of physical activity. A comprehensive discussion of these risks is beyond the scope of this text; instead, the focus of this chapter will be those specic aspects of risk to which the obese patient may be more prone and what steps can be taken to mitigate these risks with specic attention paid to the risk of suffering an acute coronary event.
