ABSTRACT

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and its sulfate ester, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS), are circulating steroids produced in signi‰cant quantities by the adrenal glands such that peak serum concentrations, which are achieved at 20-30 years of age, exceed those of cortisol (Orentreich et al. 1984). Thereafter, concentrations of circulating DHEA/DHEAS fall progressively with age, such that at age 70, the levels are only 20%–30% of those seen in young adults (Orentreich et al. 1984).
