ABSTRACT

Protein has long been considered by athletes to be the dietary key to strength gains and lean mass acquisition. Although this is not entirely true, it is reality that, without adequate amino acid availability, protein accretion is not possible. Protein accretion, or positive protein balance, is necessary to increase lean muscle mass. Although it may be assumed that “big muscles” are not necessary for all athletes, it is a myth that strong lean muscles have to make an athlete bulky. The truth is that lean muscle is necessary for a positive metabolism, explosiveness, speed, quickness, and strength. Most would agree that these are favorable characteristics of most all athletes.
