ABSTRACT
Chemomechanical polymers are smart materials that respond to external chemical compounds in the surrounding medium through a mechanical action, usually with a change in volume. Figure 8.1 illustrates the appearance and possible applications of such smart materials: expansion as observed with a chitosan hydrogel particle (a), its possible use as an artiˆcial muscle (b), and its use for drug delivery (c and d).
