ABSTRACT

Global climate change is a phenomenon that has been known to scientists for over 70 years, but it has only been at the forefront of the public consciousness over the last two decades (CorfeeMorlot et al., 2007). The most recent report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) indicates that the average global temperature will probably rise between 1.1°C and 6.4°C by 2090-2099 as compared with 1980-1999 temperatures, with the most likely rise being between 1.8°C and 4.0°C (IPCC, 2007a). The IPCC also concluded that “Most of the observed increase in global average temperatures since the mid-20th century is very likely due to the observed increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentrations” (IPCC, 2007a).
