ABSTRACT
This entry provides an introduction to optical computing. The author provides a thoughtful discussion of what optical computing is and what it is not. Advantages and disadvantages of optical computing are contemplated, and the concept of optical computing is provided for optical pattern recognition, optical algebra and neural networks, and optical interconnections. Finally, a short discussion of optical computing systems and components is provided.
