ABSTRACT

Considerable attention has been given to edible food packaging, which is intended to be an integral part of and to be eaten with the food product; thus, they are also inherently biodegradable (Krochta, 2002). The increasing interest and research activity in edible packaging have been motivated by both increasing consumer demand for safe, convenient, and stable foods and also awareness of the negative environmental impacts of nonbiodegradable packaging waste. Although the terms edible šlms and edible coatings are sometimes referred to as synonyms, there is a difference in that ’lms are preformed separately and then applied to food surface or sealed into edible pouches, whereas coatings are formed directly onto food surfaces.
