ABSTRACT

The birth of the Internet era generates extensive speculation about the potential consequences of the development for data storage, information management, knowledge identication, understanding extraction, result utilization, better service designing, implementation, etc. Despite the growing literatures and the rapid development of new techniques, most previous works focus on the theoretical foundation or modeling designing. Numerous algorithms and methods are proposed to improve the processing performance from data to information, from information to knowledge, and from knowledge to intelligence; however, there are still gaps between these methodologies and application services. In this chapter, we not only introduce the representative techniques but also analyze why they are so important for service designing. This chapter is a tentative analysis on providing a bridge to associate those theoretical methodologies with real-life service engineering.
