ABSTRACT

Protein expression occurs in all living cells, but the focus here is on tailor-made protein expression by the aid of recombinant DNA technology. Recombinant DNA (rDNA) technology, also called “gene technology” or “genetic engineering,” involves taking genetic material from one source and recombining it in vitro with genetic material from another source and thereafter introducing the recombined material into a host cell. Genetic engineering, combined with cell culture technology, makes it possible to produce large quantities of virtually any protein, including therapeutically interesting proteins. The pharmaceutical industry realized the potentials of the new technology concomitant with the development of its tools in the early 1970s, and the rst gene technologically produced human protein drug was approved for
