ABSTRACT
Carroll v. United States occurred during Prohibition. Federal agents stopped a person who was driving what appeared to be a heavily laden car on a highway. They knew the person had previously engaged in transporting bootleg whiskey, and they searched the car without obtaining a warrant. After cutting open upholstery in the rumble seat of the car, they found 68 bottles of illicit liquor.
