ABSTRACT

Geological storage can serve a powerful role as an emissions reduction technology but the acceptance of this new “paradigm” will require a view of geological storage as safe and environmentally sound. Caprock and reservoir integrity as well as an adequate understanding of the possible leakage mechanisms through the caprock is one of the technical development issues of critical importance to the safe and effective implementation of geological storage. The IEA Weyburn CO2 Monitoring and Storage Project offers one of the best opportunities to conduct a performance assessment of a caprock system overlying a large scale storage project.
