ABSTRACT

The term cosmeceutical was coined in 1980 by the dermatologist Albert Kligman, by blending the words cosmetics and pharmaceutical (Kligman, 2005). Cosmeceuticals are cosmetic products with biologically active ingredients having medical or drug-like bene’ts by treating and preventing imperfections of the skin. Some of the most popular cosmeceutical ingredients include grape seed extracts, Aloe vera, mushrooms, olive oil, green tea, licorice, coffee, berry extracts, vitamin E, etc. (Baumann, 2007). In recent years, marine derivatives have been revolutionizing skincare, and there has been an increasing interest in the untapped potential of marine-based ingredients as cosmeceuticals. Marine microorganisms have proven to be a rich source of biologically active secondary metabolites (Kim et al., 2008).
