ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 described the rigorous model for batch distillation, as well as the diculties in solving the dynamic equations constituting the rigorous models. This chapter is devoted to simplied models of batch distillation. Since computers have made it possible to analyze and solve large-scale models in a reasonable amount of time, what is the need for developing simplied models? The rst section deals with this question. It is followed by the development of a simple, ecient, reasonably accurate shortcut model. The chapter also describes a hierarchy of models, ranging from the simplied shortcut model to the model based on the collocation approach. This chapter also explains the assumptions and the level of abstraction behind each model.
