ABSTRACT

The entry points to the complexity of retail supply chains where many manufacturing suppliers support many stores. This makes coordination much more challenging than in other industries like capital goods where there are fewer manufacturers and customers. The entry describes the meaning of “independent” and “dependent” demand and their use in planning, forecasting, and replenishment decisions. Other descriptions are provided for the “bullwhip effect” and “derived demand.”
