ABSTRACT
The entry points to the importance of top management support for transformational change. Leaders do things they understand and believe because failing may cost them their jobs. However, few CEOs understand operational transformation well enough to be successful. The case describes the role of the CEO at 3M corporation, an outsider recruited from General Electric, in making change happen.
