ABSTRACT

The entry discusses the roles teams can play in the organization or in efforts that cross company boundaries. There are multiple variations on the types of teams in firms. There are problem solving/decision‐making teams, production teams, self‐directed work teams, semi‐autonomous work teams, engineering or project teams, and management teams. The entry examines two types of teams—cross‐functional and self‐directed work teams. Second, this entry examines the empowerment of teams. Advantages of empowerment include better problem‐solving and greater flexibility through cross‐training to handle varying workloads.
