ABSTRACT

The entry profiles the remanufacturing industry. The topic goes under names like reverse logistics, green supply chains, and closed‐loop supply chains. Examples of tactical, or operational, decisions include how to structure the reverse logistics network in an efficient manner, how and when returned units should be graded and processed, and what processing should be performed. Remanufacturing is almost always less expensive than producing a new unit of the product because many parts and components can be reused, thus avoiding the need to procure them from suppliers. In addition, remanufacturing enables firms to extend product life cycles, which helps keep them out of landfills.
