ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: Imaging is a critical tool for the management of thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer. High-resolution thyroid ultrasonography (US) is the principal diagnostic imaging tool preoperatively. Thyroid US is used to determine risk stratiˆcation for thyroid nodules in order to guide decision making for surgery. A detailed description of perioperative thyroid US ˆndings is provided with ˆgures. Thyroid US is also used to guide ˆne-needle aspiration biopsy and may be evaluated in conjunction with other imaging modalities, mainly computed tomography (CT). Thyroid US is also useful to evaluate suspicious lymph nodes preoperatively and suspicious areas of residual or recurrent cancer postoperatively. As thyroid US technology improves, so will comprehensive care of the thyroid cancer patient.
