ABSTRACT

Bergamot is cultivated almost exclusively in Calabria and has the same cultivation practices and needs as other citrus species. The presence of bergamot in Calabria is related to its pedoclimatic conditions and mainly to the properties of its soil, which is of alluvial origin, a mixture of sand, clay, and limestone. Bergamot is a middle-sized plant. It generally develops slower than other citrus species, with regular and symmetrical foliage. It is traditionally kept low, approximately 1 m above the ground, mainly as a defense against the wind, which is extremely feared by the Calabrian farmers.
