ABSTRACT

The author discusses the effects of the alkyl chain length, chain chemical structure, and number of layers upon the tribological properties of organosulfur self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on Au surfaces using a conventional pin-on-plate method. The tribological properties of SAMs covalently bonded to Si and alkylsilane SAM were investigated to examine the effect of the head groups upon the tribological properties. For the alkyl chain length effect, the SAMs with longer alkyl chains showed lower and more stable friction coef- cients than those with shorter alkyl chains. For the effect of the chain chemical structure, the SAMs with benzene rings and those with alkyl chains had similar tribological behavior. However, the SAMs with benzene rings had higher wear resistance than those with alkyl chains. For the effect of number of layers on tribological properties, the double layer with outer-most layers of methyl
