ABSTRACT

A teleoperator or a telerobot is a machine or device which extends an opera tor’s sensing and manipulation capability to a remote environment. Today, modern and advanced teleoperators and telerobotic devices are finding nu merous applications in hazardous environments, including: (1) those which

are hazardous to humans (such as nuclear decommissioning, inspection, and waste handling; bomb disposal and minefield clearance: unmanned un derwater inspection; and search and rescue); (2) those in which humans adversely affect the environment (such as medical applications and cleanroom operations); and (3) those which are impossible for humans to be situated in (such as deep space and nano-robotics).
