ABSTRACT
There are many contexts in which two objects, although different, will serve the same purpose equally well, and one frequently says that the two things are equiva lent. We shall draw up a precise definition describing the mathematical use of this term. There are two quite different structures which capture the mathematical idea that is involved; our main theorem is a demonstration of this fact. A second theorem concerns a technical device that we shall apply several times in Chapter 9.
