ABSTRACT
The last great extension of the number system is to the complex numbers. Whereas negative numbers have been generally accepted as legitimate, complex numbers are still regarded with great suspicion by most nonmathematicians. Even the standard terminology of the subject involving the adjectives imaginary and complex suggests that the concept is both mystical and difficult.
