ABSTRACT
Sets are the objects of modern mathematical study, and logic is the method by which they are studied. We must therefore have some understanding of logic in order to study mathematics.
Before starting our study of logic, it is appropriate to consider more carefully the relation between logic and mathematics. First, we must distinguish between logic and the more specialized topic mathematical logic. Logic is the study of the processes of reasoning. Mathematical logic is not simply the study of the reason ing processes of mathematics, but the use of mathematical methods to study the reasoning processes of mathematics.
