ABSTRACT

When the digits and boxes arrived on Monday morning, Jacob was delighted with them. All the surfaces were beautifully smooth, all the edges and corners had been expertly rounded off , and the drawstring bag was beautifully fi nished as well. Jacob began to work with Elizabeth at once. He gave her the digits one at a time, encouraging her to handle them for long enough to learn their shapes well. Fortunately, she already knew how to count and do simple arithmetic in her head.
