ABSTRACT

An image is complete when color information is assigned to objects in the image. In the case of 3D scenes, this correspondence can be established by calculating the illumination (lighting). This is a natural step because it simulates our visual perception of the physical world. Our challenge in creating natural-looking lighting is to determine the illumination of the scene: given a point p ∈ S ⊂ R3, a light source , and an observer at a point O, determine the light L originating at point P and its interaction with the given point at the surface, which is noticed by the observer.
