ABSTRACT
Healey presents an algorithm for computing the spectral reflectance of a material from a color image [3]. Spectral reflectance is useful for material identification because it is independent of illumination conditions and is largely inde pendent of scene geometry. The method requires only a single highlight and is based on the assumption that highlights have the same spec tral composition as the illu m in an t. Central to the method is a sensor model and the use of basis functions to approximate the reflected color signal from a color image. Experiments with images of plastic cups illustrate the accu racy of the approach.
