ABSTRACT

Generally, housing is constructed to attempt to eliminate traumas from environmental causes. Fight wounds are most common in the limbs, digits, tail tip, oral commissure (tears), and hip (lacerations). These can range from puncture wounds to deep lacerations into the musculature and joints. Antibiotic coverage is most important during the healing period (generally 7 to 10 days). Cefazolin is a common antibiotic choice that affords good coverage; consider the addition of metronidazole if anaerobic conditions are in place in the wound. Consider checking the tetanus vaccine status of the animal as well. If bone is exposed in the digits or tail regions, amputations can be performed, but not into the metacarpal/metatarsal regions if possible.
