ABSTRACT
Iodine is an inorganic substrate essential for thyroid hormone synthesis. At present, no other use apart from thyroid hormone synthesis is known in human biology. Thyroid hormones are essential for normal progression of pregnancy and neurointellectual development of the fetus.
