ABSTRACT

Antibodies have been a biological workhorse for well over a century. Since the rst description of immunoglobulins in the 1870s by Emil von Behring and Shibasaburo Kitasato (Janeway et al., 1999), extraordinary advances have been made in the use of antibodies in a wide range of research and commercial applications. Antibodies were rst used as crude antiserum for viral diseases. Today, highly engineered therapeutic antibodies combat a variety of life-threatening illnesses.
