ABSTRACT

Over more than 200 years since Jenner’s time, antibodies have become an indispensable tool in the study of biology and medicine. In biology, they have been a key component of the surge in fundamental knowledge that has occurred in the last quarter century. In the practice of medicine, multiple vaccines have led to the control (at least in the developed world) of many common infectious diseases (e.g., polio, mumps, measles, chickenpox), as well as those endemic to the tropics (e.g., yellow fever, typhoid, rabies, etc.). They have also been envisioned to deliver drugs and other compounds to the site of the disease.
