ABSTRACT

Gangs in schools may be disruptive to the school environment because their presence may result in several things, one of which may be fear. Students may be fearful to attend school and these fears, in turn, may result in students’ poor academic performance. Another thing that may result from gangs’ presence in schools is violence. Gangs may bring violence from the outside community into the school environment. The violence that occurs is likely to have detrimental effects on the students and the staff. With this said, it is clear that it is very important to understand the presence and consequences of gangs in our schools.
