ABSTRACT

Public transit riders are often unable to obtain timely information about transit service. At the same time, the complexity and scale of public transit systems makes it difficult for service providers to capture and manage rider concerns. To this end, we designed a system to foster a greater sense of community between riders and transit service providers. This system, named Tiramisu (www.tiramisutransit.com), focuses on crowdsourcing information about bus location and bus load, predicting the arrival time of buses, and providing a convenient platform for reporting problems and positive experiences within the transit system. Tiramisu is also designed to support the needs of riders with disabilities through the application of universal design principles. This system allows co-production of value from all users, including people who frequently encounter accessibility barriers with social computing and interaction techniques. This paper discusses co-production strategies used by the team and describes data contributed by the community.
