ABSTRACT

By the very nature of the topic, in this chapter, we will attempt to demonstrate how natural products have led to relatively effective treatments, not “cures,” for a variety of viral infections that plague Homo sapiens. This chapter is not intended to be exhaustive in nature as the topic could well ˜ll a book in its own right, but will hopefully demonstrate that a large number of the agents currently in clinical use, in clinical and preclinical trials, and those still at the discovery stage, owe a signi˜- cant “debt” to natural product structures, some from sources/organisms that are well known, others that are not.
