ABSTRACT

Cancer is the largest single cause of death in both men and women, claiming over 7 million lives each year worldwide. The surgical removal of a malignant tumor followed by radiation therapy and/or adjuvant therapy with chemotherapeutic drugs can be curative; however, the removal of certain cancers, for example, breast carcinoma, colon carcinoma, and osteogenic sarcoma, may be followed by a rapid metastasis to the lungs, liver, etc. Tumor angiogenesis involves the directional sprouting of new vessels toward a solid tumor. The stimuli that promote tumor angiogenesis may be provided directly by the tumor cells themselves or indirectly by host in´ammatory cells that are attracted to the tumor site. Thus, tumor angiogenesis is important to the growth of primary as well as secondary metastatic tumors [1-3]. Tumor cells are thought to
