ABSTRACT

This chapter initiates the steps in workflow and process management when applied to improving the quality of health and health care through use of automation. It describes strategies for determining the readiness of a care delivery organization (CDO) to manage the level of change that EHR and HIT require of knowledge workers. It provides specific, practical tools for assessing an organization’s culture and change capacity, visioning, assessing and addressing end-user needs with respect to EHR and HIT adoption, and setting goals in support of a continuous quality improvement (CQI) program. It urges CDOs to establish a workflow and process management governance structure explained in a project charter.
