ABSTRACT

This chapter provides detailed information on mapping current workflows and processes. Because those who actually perform the work should perform the mapping to the extent possible, the chapter begins with practical tips on “documenting while doing.” Those who perform the work that will be changed by an electronic health record (EHR) or other health information technology (HIT) are in the best position to describe the actual work, will gain an appreciation of the need for EHR, and are more able to anticipate better ways to perform work with HIT. The primary purpose of the chapter, then, is to give detailed instruction on current workflow and process mapping techniques. The key components of a workflow and process map are discussed in detail: boundaries, operations, decisions, and flow. Incorporation of special symbols, annotations, subsidiary documents, and tips on reaching the right level of mapping are also supplied throughout the chapter.
